Tip

How, in a bookstores full of thousands of titles, does a reader choose yours?

Maybe a little medal that lives on your book cover tells a browser that there's a good reason to expect your book may be better than the average bear.

How do you convince an editor that you are newsworthy, that you are credible? Perhaps they'll be impressed because of the awards by your name.

Now, here's the big secret. It often makes no difference how prestigious the award is. Casual readers may not understand the difference between a Pulitzer and a Pushcart or a Preditor and Editor's Poll.  Editors (other than book editors) don't either. All they know is they have eight column inches to fill and your award may convince them to fill them with something about you.

Writing Tip

Passive construction has gotten a bad wrap. We obviously have it in the English language because it serves a purpose. There are times when passive can work for an author. An example of that is in an excerpt of This Is the Place where I wanted to slow down the prose, wanted to make readers feel as if they were stepping back to the 50 and even farther, to the 1800s. Find an example of how I used it in an excerpt from that novel. Learn about other ways writers  can use it to their advantage in my The Frugal Editor.

Poetry Chapbooks As Greeting Cards Available in Quantities of Twenty-Five

Cover art by Vicki Thomas, Poetry by Magdalena Ball and Carolyn Howard-Johnson

"Cherished Pulse is full of poems that describe love from the eyes and hearts of young and old. We see love in its youthful stage, stirring the hearts of man and woman alike and tying a bond that even death cannot break. As we continue reading, we understand that love deepens into an awesome, but quiet joy as the couple grows older. These poems renew our faith in love as they remind us of our own experience with this most sought after emotion."
~ Lucille P Robinson for Alternative-Read.com

Third in the Celebration of Chapbooks with Magdalena Ball, Imagining the Future is written expressly for fathers "and other masculine apparitions."
