Carolyn Loved Being a UCLA Instructor

Writers and Authors!

If you'd like me to come speak at a writer's conference in your area
to share topics I taught
at UCLA,please let your program director know!

Carolyn was an instructor for the Writers' Program since for nearly a decade where she regularly received exemplary student ratings. She has also presented at many writing conferences sponsored by US universities and served as guest speaker for university instructors like Eve Caram, a UCLA award-winning instructor and author of Goodbye Corpus Christi.  She  is proud of the Certificate of Completion she earned from UCLA's Instructor Development Program (2005) where both the master teachers and fellow instructors were outstanding!

"I come away with inspiration and knowledge I never expected to glean
(not to mention the extensive handout information)."
~ Michael J. Wallach, student and author, UCLA Weekend Promotion Seminar

Carolyn often is asked to be a guest speaker for other instructors

Other Classes and Seminars

Sometimes Carolyn appears at events from afar.
With thanks to others who recommend her work.

From Pen USA's 2007 Fellowship Program's Seminar
on Promotion at Antioch University.

"Carolyn takes the shame out of shameless self-promotion.
Her Do-It-Yourself approach to marketing quelled my technophobia
and reassured me that I can and must be my own publicist."
~ Alisha Westerman,
2007 PEN USA Emerging Voices Fellow

About The Author/Speaker

As a college freshman, Carolyn Howard-Johnson was the youngest person ever hired as a staff writer for the Salt Lake Tribune--"A Great Pulitzer Prize Winning Newspaper"-- where she wrote features for the society page and a column under the name of Debra Paige. She gave her first speech as a professional (representing the Salt Lake Tribune) at the age of eighteen to a high school assembly in Magna, Utah. Very scary, indeed.

In high school she gave readings and participated in retold story events statewide.  One of Carolyn's many majors before settling on English Literature was teaching. For short stints she taught in Pittsfield, MA, and Glendale, CA at both the junior high and grade school levels. She was an instructor for UCLA Extension's world-renowned Writers' Program and speaks at seminars at writers' conferences and book fairs nationally, at retail and book tradeshows, and for writers clubs and other organizations including Toastmasters' groups.

Carolyn has also appeared on more than 300 radio and TV shows to promote her novel, book of creative nonfiction, poetry chapbook and her HowToDoItFrugally series of books for writers. She has appeared in commercial TV ads like Time-Life's CD infomercial and a print ad for Apple's laptop.  She has also appeared in national and international TV spots for Disney Cruises (Japan), Lenscrafters, Marlboro, Blue Shield, and others.

Carolyn was honored as Woman of the Year in Arts and Entertainment Award by California Legislature members, Carol Liu, Dario Frommer and Jack Scott. She is the recipient her community's Character and Ethics award for her work promoting tolerance,  her community's Diamond Award for the Arts, and was named to Pasadena Weekly's list of "San Gabriel Valley Women Who Make Life Happen." "I have been a professional writer 40 years, and am also a tenured full professor of journalism. Carolyn's Sharing with Writers newsletter is  most useful for me--and for my students. I emphasize to them that while research is 90% of writing, and the actual writing is about 10%, there's another 100% out there called promotion. Carolyn shows numerous ways to get the message to the mass media."

Tip

One of the best entertainment values around are free readings -- from open mics for poetry readings to readings from novels at bookstores. One of my favorites was a reading by Carolyn See at Vroman's. The entertainment was delightful and the free food  scrumptious! I've read from my work there a couple times and the crowd is always full of people you'd like to know.

Better Marketing with Permalinks
